South Coast Raceway Celebrates 20 Years with Historic Anniversary Weekend

South Coast Raceway marked a major milestone with its 20th Anniversary Race Weekend, delivering two days of high-impact drag racing, milestone moments, and celebrations that highlighted the track’s growth and significance in Victorian motorsport.

From competitive radial racing to landmark exhibition runs, the weekend reflected both the history of the venue.

Radial Shootout Launches Anniversary Weekend

The celebrations began with the South Coast Raceway Radial Shootout, bringing together strong fields across multiple radial classes. The event set the tone for the weekend, with fast, competitive racing and strong spectator attendance creating momentum leading into the anniversary day.

20th Anniversary Race Day Delivers Full Program

Saturday marked the official 20-year anniversary of South Coast Raceway, featuring a full day of on-track action and exhibition passes. Racers, teams, officials, and spectators came together to acknowledge two decades of racing at the Portland-based venue.

The program highlighted the depth of grassroots racing while delivering standout moments that will be remembered as key milestones in the track’s history.

Lamattina Top Fuel Dragster Makes History

A defining highlight of the weekend was the appearance of Lamattina’s Top Fuel dragster, which made its first-ever passes at South Coast Raceway as part of the anniversary celebrations.

In a historic achievement for the venue, the track record was reset twice during the Top Fuel runs, underlining both the performance of the car and the capability of the surface. The ground-shaking passes marked a new benchmark for the track.

Burnout Demonstration Adds to the Celebration

Adding to the spectacle, a burnout demonstration formed part of the anniversary program. Heavy tyre smoke and raw engine noise brought the crowd to the fence, reinforcing the culture and entertainment side of motorsport that South Coast Raceway has fostered over its 20-year history.

Community Focus and Evening Celebrations

Beyond the racing, the anniversary weekend highlighted the strong community behind South Coast Raceway. Racers, supporters, and officials reflected on the commitment required behind the scenes to sustain a regional drag racing venue for two decades.

The day concluded with a live band from 7pm, allowing competitors and fans to continue the celebrations after racing wrapped up.
